Plant-based eating is neither a fad diet nor the latest food trend. Rather it represents a seismic shift in the way we approach and think about the food we eat. It is a lifestyle that everybody should consider embracing.
Plant based eating is a WIN, WIN, WIN proposition. It is great for our health, it is kindest on the environment and is of course a major boon for animals. There are no downsides – not even missing out on your roast beef, or grilled cheese sandwich. I promise you, the desire for these will quickly recede once you realise how amazing you feel eating clean, plant foods.
Now for some reason a lot of people stick their fingers in their ears if they even hear the words vegan or plant based living. Vegans (unfortunately) are often viewed as overbearing zealots trying to convert everyone to their new plant based religion. And people don’t want to hear a sermon. They don’t want to hear animal horror stories, they don’t want to feel shamed, and they don’t want to be bullied. So I am not going to do any of those things.
I just want to tell you about all the truly incredible benefits of plant based eating. I want you to have the information so you can make the best, informed decision yourself.
And I’m sorry if I might seem a little too excited about this topic but I feel compelled to talk about it. In fact, I want to shout what I have learned from the rooftops. Even if only a few people listen, and a few lives are changed, it will be worth it.
The benefits of eating a whole foods plant based diet are too good and so far-reaching that I have to share. I feel that I would be doing my friends, family, and the wider community in general, a great disservice if I didn’t.
But I digress…. I was going to tell you about the incredible benefits of eating a plant based diet.
So let’ get into it…
For your health:
Plant based eating has been scientifically proven to be the best diet for long-term health and vitality. Eating a whole foods plant based diet will help you to:
- Live longer
- Look and feel younger
- Lose weight
- Lower cholesterol
- Prevent heart disease
- Lower risk of cancer
- Preserve eye sight
- Prevent and treat diabetes
- Avoid surgery
- Decrease need for medications
- Keep bones strong
- Avoid stroke
- Avoid kidney stones
- Lower blood pressure
- Avoid Alzheimer’s
- Beat arthritis
- And more…
Sounds pretty good to me. What about you? The benefits of a whole food plant based diet have been shown to be only positive – tackling, preventing and even reversing a whole slue of chronic diseases that are plaguing large swathes of our population today. These diseases don’t need to happen… we just need to eat more plants. It is that simple.
For the planet:
Plant based eating is hands down the best diet for our ailing and resource constrained planet. Did you know that animal based agriculture creates more green house gas emissions than all forms of transportation combined? That it takes up to a third of the world’s fresh water consumption. Or that livestock covers 45% of the earth’s total landmass?…. Those are crazy kinds of figures.
Feeding a vegan uses 1/18th of the land, 1/13th of the water 1/11th of the oil and emits 50% less carbon dioxide than feeding a meat eater. Think about that. What a difference it would make if we all ate more plant based foods. As it turns out this is the biggest individual contribution that anyone can make towards mitigating climate change, preserving land and water resources and maintaining a healthy environment.
For the animals:
Now I promised no horror stories, so I won’t go into details about the deplorable state of animal agriculture today. I will leave that to your own imagination. But suffice it to say that animals deserve our respect and compassion… all animals, not just those we have chosen to protect and cherish as pets, but those in the factories and farms too. Isn’t a pig just as smart, if not smarter, than a dog? Why do dogs get the special treatment? Just think about the joy and easement of suffering that you can create by choosing not to eat meat. That has to count for something.
So there it is, a VERY brief summary of some of the almost countless benefits of following a plant based diet.
